Travellers - at upper secondary schools

Vulnerable adolescents

Research projects at the Centre for Suicide Research have dealt with adolescents' vulnerability and suicidal behaviour. 11% of adolescents at upper secondary schools are exposed and vulnerable. Furthermore, approximately 21% of the girls are at risk of developing an eating disorder and approximately 11 % of all the adolescents have committed self-harm. 13 % have experienced serious thoughts of self-harm the last year.

Travellers

Travellers is a psycho-educative programme developed by skylight, in New Zealand. Travellers focuses on well-being rather than illness, treatment or lack of mental strength. The idea behind the project is to make adolescents imagine that they are travellers in life. Simultaneously, they are encouraged to acquire and develop coping strategies that can guide them through difficulties, challenges and changes on their life-journey.

Travellers is not a therapeutic course but focuses on mental health across different backgrounds. The vulnerable adolescents participate in well-structured group courses of eight meetings. Each meeting is lead by a professional Travellers teacher and focuses on one theme, e.g. self-confidence or networking.
